Health departments perform food inspections and other health related inspections (the person who performs this job is often called a public health inspector). Food safety goes beyond passing health inspections and meeting regulatory requirements. In the United States, several states have imposed uniform statewide restaurant grading systems, under which safety and hygiene inspection reports are used to compute numerical scores or letter grades, and those must be prominently posted by restaurants. In Big Island such mandatory posting of restaurant grades is not required. A great way to search and view food inspections performed by the Public Health Department in Big Island is the state of Hawaii's Inspection Health Portal.
